Hunger Through The Eyes Of A Pet

Imagine the worry in a hungry dog’s eyes when the bowl stays empty. Or a cat waiting, unsure if food will come today. That quiet suffering is real—and we believe no pet should ever feel it.

What Hunger Looks Like ... Through a Pet's Eyes

What happens when a pet goes hungry—and a family makes hard choices. When a family has too little, every meal matters.

Not just for people—pets are often caught in the middle of the hardest choices. At Pet Food Bank Lakeside, we know this struggle is real.

The Bigger Picture

In communities like ours, the burden of food insecurity extends beyond the kitchen table. It reaches into the hearts of those who love their pets deeply—but simply don’t have enough to go around.

Research from the U.S. shows that in food-insecure households, over half of pet owners worry about running out of pet food—and many actually do. Nearly 70% stretch or skip meals for their pets, and some even skip their own meals just to keep their pets fed.

This isn’t rare. It’s happening all around us. Though there’s no direct Mexican pet-food study, research from other countries shows a compelling link: households struggling to feed themselves are much more likely to worry about (and actually run out of) pet food, stretch meals, or skip feeding their pets entirely.

Right Here in Lakeside

Every month, thanks to your generosity, we provide food to support 1066 dogs and cats in our community. These are pets living with families and elderly adults who are already struggling to keep themselves fed.
